4. Furniture Restoration and Refinishing

We started as a furniture restoration and refinishing company and we still work on antiques.

This piece is one of our favorite masterworks. It came to us in two burlap bags. The owners claimed that the bags contained every little bit of it and they sure did. The top was covered in a thick layer of settled coal dust. It took us a week to remove it. Here it is now, as beautiful as in day one, more than 100 years ago.

A Chickerring baby grand piano. We loved working on this piece although it required a lot of heavy work. the results were worth it though!

This beautiful English oak chest needed structural repairs. The drawers were difficult to close, hanging on side.

A beautiful dresser from the early 1900’s with birds eye burl veneer placed in a baby’s room.

Another of our favorites–a beautiful English oak vanity. The original craftsman has engraved his name at the backs of the two small drawers at the mirror base. But it is not the beauty of the piece, the exquisit craftsmanship of the builder, or the fact it comes from the Old World that makes it close to our hearts. At the back of the mirror we found a page from the British Globe from September 3, 1883 which was used as cution between the glass and the frame. One of the lead articles on this page talked about a political crisis in Bulgaria, our home coutry. It was as if it was meant that the piece would come to our shop…

This wonderful split pedestal dining table from the early 20th century. It has 5 leaves and seats 12 (compare to the work table in the background which is the size of a dining table for 6). What makes this project close to our hearts are all the difficulties we encountered while working on it. The split pedestal is made of massive solid wood which on one hand makes the table more stable but on the other makes leveling it quite a task.

It seems we’ve gotten ourselves into huge projects. This is our most recent one–the 18′ long two-piece boardroom conference table at Business Carolina , Inc. It was originally built by M. Craig & Co but was severely scratched during a recent move. We brought it back to its original beauty and we hope that the board members of Business Carolina, Inc. like it too.
