Wood inlays have been known for centuries to bring the natural beauty of the wood to our homes. A remarkable piece that attracts hundreds of admirers every day in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York is the Gubio Studiolo from the Palace of Federico da Montefeltro, 15th century, attributed to Francesco di Giorgio and others, executed by Giuliano da Maiano. This art has been know in Europe and East Asia and has gone through various style changes that reflect the general trends in art.

This great tradition influenced the inlay flooring, marquetry and parquetry. It is recently having a rebirth due to innovations in wood cutting and computer design. This process made custom hardwood floors more affordable to the public.
